Useful work is now being done in this Univers- Ity in connexion with the study of law and there is

considerable enthusiasm among the students for this branch of work. We are anxious to inaugurate the

comparative study of British and Roman and Chinese law.

Your deputation will appreciate what a vast field of

research in Chinese la lies inviting investigation. In order to start on this work all that will be necessary for the present is to convert the present Readership in Law and Politics into a Professorship and to add

a Lectureship. This will involve an annual outlay

of $16,000 or about £1,600. But here again the salaries will have to be paid in Hong Kong dollars.

The Medical School of the University, which

has received in the course of the last few years an

endomment from the Rockefeller Trustees to the extent

of Hongkong $750,000 is doing valuable work. The effectiveness of the school is, however, prejudiced

by the lack of an adequate department of biology. Hongkong is undoubtedly a favourable centre for a school

of biological research. Further I am convinced that

any serious attempt to improve and safeguard the general health of China must include provision for effective medical research in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is

one of the gateways into China. In these days of

quick communication disease is easily carried from

one country to another. I would therefore impress

upon your Deputation how urgently necessary to the medical school of this University is an adequate department of Biology.
